The Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project is another non-profit, volunteer organization. The group operates two pen rearing facilities in Monterey Bay and one at Moss Landing Harbor. As at Avila Beach, the project seeks to increase the number of chinook salmon in the Monterey Bay area available for both commercial and sport fishing. Pen-held salmon are acclimated to salt water over a period of several days. They may be held for up to several weeks, until they are ready for release. A marine biologist provides technical expertise and guidance to volunteers responsible for the care and release of the penned fish. Approximately 60,000 smolts from Feather River Hatchery are reared at each of the two sites. The program has been funded by the Salmon Stamp Program since its inception in 1992.
